I'm not at all surprised. They worked together on McCain-Feingold, and apparently hold each other in high regard.
I do not believe that Fred ran simply as a spoiler for McCain, though it appears to have worked out much that way.
It's a two- (well, one-and-a-half-)man race now, and I don't think Thompson's any fan of Huckabee.
