In related news, WTF is up with Seattle PD's takedown training, or lack thereof? Where are their Tasers? Where is their backup? Does this cop even know how to do that arm lock he was attempting for several minutes?

I understand he was playing it soft, and I understand that it was probably because so many people were around him, but that crowd could have just as easily turned ugly. (Also, no one offers to help the officer? I guess I don't know the etiquette in that situation.)

This two minute flail-fest is exactly why cops are rough in takedowns. Once he had her against the hood of the car, the head should have hit the hood to control the rest of the body. Instead, her upper body is free to move and twist. I dunno. This whole video just made me feel real uneasy about the officer's safety.

This is even more disturbing to me now because after we moved, a cop came to our door looking for someone who must have been the previous occupant.

Glad the previous occupant didn't do something that would cause the police to pick up automatic weapons, put on heavy bulletproof vests and black masks, throw flashbangs through our window, break down our door, and shoot us unarmed, stunned, deaf, and blinded in bed for having guns within arms reach while failing to comply with instructions we couldn't hear.

You know, something heinous like have an ounce of pot?

But I don't even have to worry about that when most of these raids can't be bothered check the goddamn address of the house before they go all SS on the occupants.

I wonder if they'd shoot Ava, our house rabbit. Actually, I'm sure they would, why wouldn't they if they're shooting dogs that are IN CAGES?

I was at Subway ordering when a cop came in. I rarely get these opportunities, so I waited for him to finish his order, and then asked if I could pay for his lunch. He said it was alright, but I insisted, and he gave in. He said he appreciated it and that this was the first time anyone had bought him lunch!

C'mon people! Your local cops are out there every day, dealing with all kinds of bullshit so you don't have to. They don't know what's going to happen when they pull over a car for a broken tail light. It's a hard job with long hours that isn't paid nearly enough for the job they have to do.

Show them some love.

911 call: Woman shoots crazed intruder

It is rare that you get the chance to vicariously live this kind of experience.

Not a dramatically directed reenactment or a somber recount of the experience, but a quantum leap into the actual event. You hear the calm, the resolve, the growing fear, the terror, and the sorrow.

It's unreal.




Of particular note is that fact that she didn't know this man. She was sleeping in her bed when her dog alerted her to the presence of a man to whom she had done no previous wrong.

This was simply a random act of violence, and reminds us of a harsh reality;

Random acts of violence can visit anyone, at any time, and irrevocably shatter lives.

It's a terrible situation all around. One man who didn't want to die, dead. One woman who never wanted to take a life, having taken one.

Who wins here?
What is the point?
What was the motivation?
How could it have been prevented?

Do you want to know the answer to these questions?

You are free to demand these answers or ponder the possibilities, but ONLY if you already own an effective weapon of defense and have the experience to use it confidently.

If you are unprepared and you want answers to these questions, I hope any criminal you might encounter isn't as divorced from reality as you are.


Do you imagine yourself an audience member of this play called life?

Do you watch these events from an opera house box seat? Offering your critical analysis, witty comment, and scathing sarcasm with the same inconsequence as one would watching a movie?

This in itself is not really something I find postworty, only because you can't swing an reality-challenged politician without hitting a county making cuts to essential services in favor of non-essential services. (The trick is to threaten the safety of the people just enough to get them to pay more taxes!)

They were probably afraid the dog was retreating to get a gun.

The police had a warrant for the home, but it named no suspects. It said only that investigators were looking for a white male and Hydrocodone. Information that led to the warrant, according to the warrant itself, came partly from an informant, Rita Patterson said.

Well, it was another warrant for a house (no word if they arrested the house) hastily drawn up on information from dubious informants whos' identities must remain sooper seekrit.

But at least they had a suspect. A white male. Hey... Are YOU a white male? Is there any reason to believe a white male might be in your home?

Do people realize the police can, at any time, break down your door, gun you down in self-defense (it looked like you were going for something, you gonna believe a cop or a dead man?), say "oh shit, sorry!" and leave?

"Executing a search warrant, police never know what they’re going to find on the other side of that door," DeGeorge said. "In most cases, these can be life and death situations."

He's right. Executing no-knock search warrants is very dangerous business.

So dangerous, in fact, that they should probably do things like, check who's home at the time, surveil the house, or even, hell, I don't know, check the goddamn address before they kill another 92 year old woman, protecting her life from unidentified assailants.

Tell me again why it's "life-or-death" important that the cops break down a door, and overwhelm the occupants with force, without so much announcing that they are policemen?

Oh yeah, because someone might flush a baggy a drugs down the toilet if they say they're police seconds before rushing in.

Hey, if these raids have the slightest chance of locking up people to do drugs, who cares how many innocent people are gunned down in the process?

Certainly not Obama.

A bit ago I was happy to write "Good job, Obama" in response to his apparent policy change toward medical marijuana.

He said he would stop the raids in states where medical marijuana is legal, he waited, then he issued this policy statement.

Yet here we are again.

So did Obama really change his policy? Or is this one of those, "I change the policy, wink wink, nudge nudge, and you can keep getting them on technicalities."

I guess we can find out when we find out either what he does about it, or if these "technicalities" keep popping up, and keeping the DEA door-kickers with doors to kick.

"Warrantless" raids on "peace" protesters

I came in this morning and had a link from one of my Democrat friends;

I used to read BoingBoing every day, but as it became more and more partisan, I got so disgusted with them I took them off my reading list, and refused to read them. This time, however, I expected my friend to talk to me about the link, so I sighed a deep sigh, and clicked the link.

Report: Massive, warrantless raids on peace protesters in Minneapolis, ahead of RNC.

It seems the homes (some homes, some merely houses rented as meeting points for other protesters) of some protesters were raided by the police looking for specific items and specific people. Everyone in the homes were detained and questioned while evidence was gathered, and then they left.

Le sigh.

I put on my rubber boots, and waded into the muck.

A couple of things became evident quickly;

1. The "warrantless" raids had warrants. Only BoingBoing reported "warrantless." Go fig.
2. This got relatively light coverage, and what coverage it DID get was either obviously biased, or took very few liberties. There doesn't seem to be a lot of support over the "outrage."
3. The video is hilarious. Listen to who they interview. She is obviously aware of why they were raided. Her weasel words hang so thick in the air, the Salon interviewer can't help but pause.
4. The items gathered are serious stuff. Some of them are not, but if you know what you're looking for from protesters, it's very obvious these items were not just "stuff" lying around.

Many items were seized by the police including PVC pipe, chicken wire and duct tape. The RNC Welcoming Committee wanted to lock themselves together in human barricades called "sleeping dragons." Also included in the raids were knives, flammable liquids, five-gallon buckets of urine, homemade caltrops (which are devices used to puncture bus tires), bolt cutters, sledgehammers, protective padding and plastic buckets that were cut into shields.

The "RNC Welcoming Committee" is a protest group that had been shooting its mouth off for a long time leading up to the RNC. The fact that they were largely ignored (none were arrested) leads me to believe the police have classified them as "Mostly Harmless." It is my opinion that they were a secondary target.

Of the 7 raids, and the many many people raided and searched, only 6 were taken in on conspiracy charges. If the cops wanted to break up all the protests as so many would have you believe, they could have easily detained everyone for an extended period of time. They didn't. In fact, they didn't even close down their "rally point" houses. Cops supposedly had lists of names and lists of specific items.

I heard a police officer on cell phone talking about a tupperware of bottles (both cities recycle). A code officer was being called to look for code violations. We expected they will try to board up the house - sort of like immediate punishment for even planning to parade in protect. Update: late in the day, the house was released and the people are back inside.

Whoops. Guess the cops didn't really care about their piddly little organization and its super radical message of peace. More about those plastic bottles later.

The Sheriff lists the items they took;

Sleeping dragons are pipes with padding inside that protesters can put their arms into, and bind their wrists together. These are used for making human walls or for doing sit-ins. They attach themselves to posts or other immobile objects using only their bodies, and form a chain across intersections or routes. The police can't just cut their arms off, and they can't break their grip on each other because the bound wrists are covered by the metal or pvc pipe they put their arms into for the link. The kryptonite locks were likely meant for use with the sleeping dragons.
Knives may be found anywhere, but what you probably won't find anywhere are machetes and throwing knives. Not much mention of these on those lefty BUSHITLER websites...
Flammable liquids I cannot find described anywhere. Could be liquor, could be gasoline. Though I'm sure it'd be described if it were more sinister. Not much to determine from this.
Homemade caltrops is an interesting one. I'd be interested to see what innocent use these were supposed to have.
Also on the list of stuff they were looking for was a general "materials for incendiary devices," but if all that was listed was flammable liquids, I think it is fair to say these guys weren't cooking up napalm or thermite...
The rest of the stuff is so-so... Cops probably grabbed it because they could. Not necessarily good, but cops have been doing this forever. Complaining about it just because it happened to them is indicative of the selective nature of the "injustices" they fight against.

The maps look home made, and were probably used to plot out routes. The idea that the maps confiscated were tourist maps or stylized drawings are BS.

Except some of the homes weren't "homes." They were houses rented by non-profit groups for the express purpose of congregating peace protesters. People didn't "live" in these home, and need to keep tools and different items there, they just needed a place to sleep, store bikes, and what one of the videos refers to as "equipment."

All the rest seemed to be BS, so I'll cut to my assessment;

This was a raid for Anarchists.

Note I capitalized the "A." These are not a loose group of people who vaguely adhere to the believe in anarchist principals. The Anarchists are a group of violent protesters with whom the police are very familiar.

The Anarchists show up at otherwise peaceful protests and execute plans to covertly escalate the situation. They goad the police into reacting to the whole crowd as they hide among other peaceful protesters. All of this is, of course, taped in order to be edited, and released on the internet. This group is very smart, very motivated, and appears to be funded. Some tactics include hiding behind pregnant women so they can be hit with rubber bullets, throwing bricks wrapped in paper while other people throw paper or light objects, throwing frozen water bottles as others throw empty ones, setting fires, using human waste on police, using wrist rockets and firecrackers to simulate officers being fired upon, and on, and on, and on. The Anarchists have served as flash points for so many protests in the past that agencies plan in advance for them, and gather enough evidence and names to detain them long enough for the event to conclude. When agencies fail to plan, you get things like the Los Angeles immigration rally "May Day Melee."

All in an effort to make the police appear to overreact to some peaceful protesters.

The ones that actually perform the violence usually wear black sweaters, and almost always wear bandannas over their face. The sleeping dragons were not for them, the Anarchists don't have enough people to do a complete sit-in and upset traffic. They probably really were for some peaceful protesters (Though there is a way to cut straight through them without injuring the protesters. Guess they missed the memo). But the caltrops, fireworks, urine, water bottles, and possibly the flammable liquids and glass bottles (who knows nowadays) were obviously for the Anarchists who had insinuated themselves into the other protesters, and were making use of their "rally points" to store their hardware.

It seems to me the police were reacting to the Anarchists, and some of the other protesters were caught up in it (honestly, they were only detained for a while, and let go to return to their house). The protesters were just overreacting. They'll still get the chance to chant "bush is hitler" or "the government needs to be in charge of everything, unless they're republicans" or whatever it is they love to say. (I still think "free speech zones" are BS, but with groups like ELF becoming more and more violent, it's hard to just say anyone can go anywhere.)

Still, there will be protesters at the convention. No official is stupid enough to stop all protesters. So don't worry your little hippie heads. Just keep up the hypocrisy, and thin-skin you guys are known for.

You like the border patrol agent who took a picture of him taking pictures?
It reminded me of something from Rob's excellent post;

Take for instance the case of Ezra Levant, a Canadian publisher brought up before the laughable "Human Rights Commission" for the unspeakable act of publishing the Mohammad cartoons. Watch the videos he has of his ordeal. Watch how detached the "human rights officer" is from the whole affair. For her, it's just a job. She gets a sheet of paper that says do X, she does X. The fact that she is is a tine in the pitchfork of fascism is lost on her. The fact that she is instrumental in crushing free speech bothers her about as much as deciding what she will be having for lunch.

"Hey look, this dude's recording us! What a douche. I'll go record him! Heh. What's his problem?"

He has recorded this check point before, this is why he asked if she already knew who he was. He made this one about a month before the above one. It's worth watching.

"You can ask me what ever you want."
Note there are no orders issued, only forceful requests. Notice also that there was very little actual answering of questions. Questions were met with questions.

Check out this video at the same checkpoint. Note how the officer doesn't ask him to stop recording, but contends that by recording the exchange, he is creating a traffic hazard. Unbelievable.

Police: Don't fight violent robber/rapists

Victims Fight Back in Home Invasion

A family of four were barbecuing outside their garage when two armed robbers force their way in and ransack the place.

"The look in their eyes, especially when they started beating us in the back of the heads with the guns. It was kind of like someone would torture a little animal and then joking about how they were going to love killing us," said one victim.

These don't sound like the kind of guys you should trust to just rob and rape, and leave promptly with a tip of the hat.

Gun grabbers and professional victims insist that when threatened with violence, you should acquiesce to your attacker's demands, because if you fight back, they might get angry. (anything but that!) Most of these folks don't say what to do if what they want is to kill.

The men were pinned to the floor with shotguns. "It got ugly when they went back downstairs and decided to tell the women to undress their clothes," the victim added, "The girls were really crying and you could just tell that they were incredibly upset."

This is a terrible situation. This is the kind of thing that ruins your life. Even if you survive the attack, you will forever know that because you failed to prepare; terrible things happened to your daughter, damaging her for life. Even if you surrender, thinking they just want to rob you, you just missed your opportunity to stop them if they change their mind.

Fortunately, while these two pieces of trash were preparing to force themselves on the victims, they saw an opportunity to fight back, and most importantly; they did.

"I grabbed him, threw him down on the ground, grabbed a weight from the weight set and smashed him in the head."

The women also joined in the fight, hitting the suspects with a frying pan.

"One of the girls completely nude managed to grab a gun and shoot the guy in the chest area and in the leg."

Suddenly these unarmed, submissive victims burst forth with anger and fury, and strike these confidently armed goblins.

This is what I mean when I talk about the victim mentality. Resigning yourself to defeat at the first sign of force can only end badly. Fighting back with anything you can, in any way you can is the only option that offers chance of success.

These people should be put on pedestals as symbols of the fighting spirit all of us have. Symbols that proclaim;
"We will fight back when our lives are threatened. We will not bend for those who would threaten it. We will meet force with force. We will protect each other."

But the police don't see it that way.

The police are very cautious not to make this seem like a heroic act. They say fighting back can sometimes end with the victims being more seriously hurt.

There you have it folks. A cut-and-dry case, and the answer is the same.

Situation:
Armed robber/murderer/rapists force their way into your home, ransack it, beat you and talk about how they will enjoy killing you. They then prepare to rape your daughter in front of your eyes.

Official police recommended course of action:
Do nothing.

Wait a minute... I missed the part where the 911 call was made, and the police were screaming to their rescue. Oh wait; the armed rapists, didn't allow them to call 911. Well, how are the police supposed to help if no one calls them?

It doesn't get any more clear folks. Not only can the police NOT protect you, they don't like it when you protect yourself.

Get firearm training, and arm yourself. NOW.

Open up; Police!

Would you open your door to a stranger? Probably not.

Would you open your door to a stranger in a police uniform? I hope not, because it just got you shot in the chest.

It's very simple, identify the people through a window or peephole, and when they indicate or imply they are law enforcement officers, ask them which department, and then call that department with 411 to confirm they are who they say they are. Ask for badge numbers and last names, and confirm with the station. Use 411 or your yellow pages, don't call a number they give.

It's not something a lot of people think about (myself included up until a few years ago), but it's a safety thing. If the cops get indignant, tell them to fuck off, and call 911. Seriously.

While we're talking about people in uniforms, you know what happened when a bunch of fed ex uniforms went up on ebay? They sold out instantly. This is why you should have a handgun on your person when answering the door when you are not expecting visitors.
