"It's too complicated, you wouldn't understand."

No, I think we understand plenty.

Now that we've had some opportunity to let the SCOTUS decision impact us directly, get the experts' opinions, get the strategists' opinions, and reconcile all this with our own opinions, I still don't feel particularly positive about the outcome.

People keep telling me that this decision is clever, strategic, even genius, but all I see is a man who preserved the public perception of the court at the expense of the entire country. Save the trickery for something less crucial to the survival of the republic.

Destabilizing the commerce clause, building some precedent (with liberal support) for limiting the overall power of the federal government, and advancing states' rights seems like a pretty sweet deal until you realize that the trade off is short term approval of the federal government to TAX YOU FOR EXISTING.

I appreciate that we have a long game to play here, but a dangerous game is still being played. This administration in particular has been VERY quick to use tricks of its own to expand its power. When you give this administration an inch, it buys guns with stimulus dollars and sends them to Mexican drug cartels who kill hundreds of Mexican citizens and at least one federal border patrol simply to advance gun control. These are NOT the people to whom you hand a dagger because you know you're going to get a sword later. They're just going to stab you in the back while looking you in the eyes soon as their fingers wrap around the handle.

I don't understand the argument that made the integrity of the SCOTUS more important than doing its job. If you ask me, they're one and the same.

If the SCOTUS had come down the way everyone expected (you know, the constitutional way), we would have had plenty of talk about the SCOTUS being overly political, and judicial activism, and all the bobble-headed pundits would have backed Obama the same way they always have. But the citizen of this country would have understood what all the polls said they did:

IT'S STILL UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

So now, instead of all the pundits hating the SCOTUS, all the citizens understand there are NO further checks on federal power.

Congratulations.

You saved the SCOTUS and lost the country.

If we're lucky, the enemies of the constitution will sit on their hands after their big win, Romney will win, the GOP will overturn Obamacare in its entirety, we'll trade some liberal justices for some strict constitutionalists, and we'll start getting this country on track.

But if all of those things don't happen exactly in that order, Roberts just handed Obama the win he needs to rebuild this country in his own image, with total federal control over everything we do, and everything we don't do.

Don't tell me that Obama won't stretch, bend, or break the "rules" in order to get what he wants. Is it beyond him to pack the supreme court? To simply choose not to enforce laws he doesn't like? To appoint unelected and unapproved czars to oversee huge swathes of economic and individual activity? To create labor relations boards under the treasury department, unelected, without congressional approval, appointed by him personally, who report only to him?

To personally oversee a "kill list" which includes American citizens who are to be exterminated by drone strikes without any form of process?

Then don't tell me that this is a win.

This is conservatives Republicans thinking they're clever by exploiting a little-known rule to beat an opponent who cheats.

This is winning the debate when the judges have already been bought by the other team.

This is fighting with finesse, skill, and guile, parrying every blow and eventually putting your opponent into an inescapable submission hold, only for him to pull a boot knife and stab you in the neck.

This is what this party has always done.

This is playing to lose.

California steals from 9/11 victims

This is impossible.
This is unfathomable.
This just can't be true.

Who am I kidding?

This is expected.

Fuck you Arnold. This is a whole new low. You disgust me.

I followed this case pretty closely, and was unsatisfied with what I thought was the end result of the case.

Turns out the murderer's daddy is best buds with the Governator, so the political girly man's last act was to commute the sentence of the murderer* (*plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter). Which, as far as I'm concerned, makes him an accomplice the same way harboring a criminal on the lam would.

Because Esteban Nuñez didn't technically kill anyone (those he personally wounded survived) his family argued that he should only get 7 to 11 years for his part in the murder, despite the fact that the wounds he inflicted on two victims could have easily resulted in death. The judge turned down this request. The Santos family agreed to a plea bargain at 16 years, and said publicly that they were tempted to turn it down and let the case progress normally to what would very likely be a life sentence, but didn't want to have to deal with all the mandatory appeals California has for harsh sentences. So the Santos family took the plea deal to get some justice now rather than live in limbo for for a decade.

Then the Chicken-shit-inator commutes this short sentence to 7 years! Damn, You-disgust-me-inator, why not just commute it entirely! You know he's not going to serve 7 whole years. I suppose you felt like you had to leave a tiny veil of coverage on this naked show of political favoritism. Frankly, I find the veil more offensive than if you had just commuted it entirely. At least then you could say you don't think he deserved it, and should get off with time served. THAT would at least be a position. You only went to seven years because you thought people would be OK with it if he served some time for a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter. This is a truly disgusting display.

But it gets worse, because our legal system allows the Santos family absolutely no recourse in the matter.

What an outrageous slap in the face to the criminal justice system, and a shameless show of political might over moral right.

Go to hell, Arnold.

Obama preps a nuclear bomb

Long-time readers know that I'm an optimist. I always look on the bright side of things, even when -- ESPECIALLY when they look the bleakest.

But in the unlikely event that the Dems get a big mid-term win with this naked vote grab, it will be the end of the United States of America as we know it.

Hyperbole?

No.

If the dems set this nuclear bomb for maximum effect, actually push the button, and pull a win out of it, it will mean several things;

1. Private Debt is now Public Debt
Lie, cheat, and steal to get into a loan, and say you can't pay it back. If you bitch loudly enough, someone will take care of it. Get more credit cards, and run 'em up to the moon! Make the minimum payment until you get bailed out! No consequences! Free money forever!

2. Income levels will drop
With the additional bailouts, and the follow up bailouts after people realize #1 is in effect, someone will have to be left holding the bill. It'll be businesses, and people who pay taxes. So people will either stop paying taxes, or get "laid off," go on the dole the like all the other looters, and take money under the table to maintain their lifestyle. Officially, income levels will drop, and joblessness will rise. Can't tax what you can't see on a W2.

3. Free loans until doomsday
Depending on the level of planning and acceptable risk level of their leadership, most lenders will figure out the implications of #1 pretty quickly, and open up their loans to anyone and everyone at high interest rates, so as to make another insurmountably large mountain of bad debt, so the government would HAVE to print more money to bail them out again! They'll take their bailouts, and either plan on leaving America, or squirrel it all away until doomsday.

4. Absolute Power until doomsday
Once the Dems get the confirmation that all the masses need are Bread and Circuses, they will print like they've never printed before in order to keep the ball rolling. Why they hell wouldn't they? In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if in the middle of this realization, they simply invoke emergency powers, and take dictatorial control. Who would stop them? Everyone's too busy eating their bread, and looking at the lions jump through the hoops. Dems will be in charge of the Former United States of America until doomsday.

5. Doomsday
No, not that Doomsday, the Doomsday when the international bubble bursts under the dollar, and the entire country crashes down to reality. You thought the great depression sucked? Get ready for The Final Depression.

Helen Thomas proves she's just as ugly on the inside

[direct link]

Who's in charge of this wretch, and why haven't they saved her from herself by convincing her to bow out gracefully? (or as gracefully as she can at this point)

The worst part? When this retarded elephant in the room that everyone has been doing their best to ignore and tip-toe around dies, the same people who put up with her for years will have to stand in front of cameras and talk about what a great person she was.

Call a spade a spade.

Helen Thomas is a festering boil on our political system who only retains her position because someone would actually have to look at her to ask her to leave.

Quote of the difference

You know what else us Tea Partiers have in common that your "true" Americans don't?

97% of us VOTE!

You know, that might be the single most important thing about this movement. Almost every single person you see at one will vote. They won't forget, they won't wait for someone else to do it for them. They WILL vote. I can't help but wonder if we set a 30 year record for amount of people voting in this mid-term. Wonder what'll happen in 2012...

Quote is from Jim, who has a great rant about the media's take on the TEA party.

Oh yeah, he's also a fucking rocket scientist. :)

Double standards in gun laws

No matter your stance on any given political issue, any honest person must agree that double standards are bullshit.

If you can take a situation as it applies to something you do not like, apply it to something you DO like and become upset with the result, then congratulations; you're full of shit.

Joe talks about why gun owners are angry, and includes maddeningly accurate examples of double standards.
What if their name were "The Brady Campaign to Prevent Slander" and they demanded free expression and speech be restricted to your own home, registration of anyone that wanted to exercise free speech--in their own homes, and you must submit to frequent police inspections of your home?

Top 10 worst things about Battlefield Bad Company 2 online

10. Failure to exhibit intelligence involving kits. (swap kits back and forth to drop med/ammo packs or revive teammates after a battle)
9. Assault players/medics who don't throw ammo packs/med packs.
8. Shitty tank drivers on your team, skilled ones on the other.
7. Shitty helicopter pilots on your team, skilled ones on the other. (the latter of which can end a game in minutes. Way to go, DICE.)
6. Lack of communication between squad members.
5. No team balance. Ever. (2 vs 10? Don't be a pussy.)
4. Griefers. (Seriously? You have nothing better to do?)
3. Team-killing over UAVs. (this is why we can't have nice things)
2. Fixed spawning (IE: insta-death)

And the number one worst thing about playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 online is...

1. Your squad, and quite possibly team, consists entirely of snipers. ALWAYS.

That's right, neither rain, nor sleet, nor attacking, nor defending, nor game play, nor situation, nor map, nor lack of visibility in game, nor complete and utter failure on your team's part will prevent the L33t snyp3rz from being snipers. So don't even try. It wouldn't be so bad if they actually played recon; moving forward, spotting targets, planting tracer darts on vehicles, planting C4 on popular roadways to destroy enemy vehicles, calling in mortar strikes on high value targets. You know, useful things? Instead they sit in one spot, even if the field has moved forward TWICE, and do nothing but shoot at, and get killed by, the other team's snipers. Sucking up respawns, and contributing little. I think the reason you can only talk to your squad, and you can't talk to your entire team (even in the lobby) is to prevent the people who are actually playing the game as intended from verbally berating their entire team for the idiocy displayed in gameplay.

There was 45 minutes-- FOURTY FIVE MINUTES-- where I played the game like it was supposed to be played. My squad wasn't full of snipers, and I made a comment, and my squadmates responded! We worked together, reporting enemy positions, spawning on eachother with support classes that were needed, and planning movements! We played the game as it was intended, and we won both times, and got the best squad award both times. It was awesome. I get the feeling BFBC2 will get better once all the Modern Warfare deathmatchers get tired of the game.

10. Read War an Peace.
9. Learn Japanese.
8. Vent on twitter.
7. Play the game you played BEFORE you owned the EA piece of trash. (Hopefully the last game wasn't an EA game too)
6. Septuple-check your internet connection.
5. Press "Retry" until the batteries in your controller run out.

3. Make sign that says, "The end of EA is nigh" and stand outside your local game shop.
2. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, repeat.

And the number one thing to do while EA's servers are down is...

1. RETURN THE GODDAMN GAME

4.5 SWAT raids per day in ONE COUNTY in MD

Maryland's SWAT transparency bill produces its first disturbing results
ONE COUNTY in Maryland discovers the excessive use of SWAT on non-violent and consentual offenses.
That means more than 100 times last year Prince George's County brought state-sanctioned violence to confront people suspected of nonviolent crimes. And that's just one county in Maryland.

Hey, you gotta justify those big budgets for all that sweet kit, and top-of-the-line training right?

Actual detail of airport body scanners

So far, this is all we've been able to see of the airport body scanners;

Whoops.

When you watch this video, keep two things in mind.

First, pay attention to the 3D image scanning, and the detail that is visible (franks and beans). The only image of this kind of scan that I've been able to find is the one above, which is significantly less detailed, and implies that this is all they can see. The video shows the 3D imaging is much more revealing.

Secondly, we're used to seeing that ghostly white image of the vague outline of the body shape, but in the video, it's very clear that there is a way to zoom in on the image, and increase the contrast. It seems very likely that presenting the zoomed, low contrast image would have been too shocking to people. Instead, they show the white blob, and let the TSA operator zoom in with a tiny viewing square. I'm sure you noticed that the TSA agent avoided zooming in on the full breast of the woman scanned. I wonder if this was because he knew he had a camera over his shoulder, and didn't want to show just how much detail there is in the zoomed image.

Once again, imagine your wife, son, or daughter being leered at by some minimum wage high school dropout with no criminal background check done prior to employment.

Wonder how many pedophiles are applying to TSA right now...

Google makes no suggestions completing the phrase "Islam is"

Google suggest fails to make suggestions for phrases beginning with "Islam is"

Go to Google, and type in "Christianity is" or "Judaism is" or any other religion, and you'll get suggestions for search terms that are usually less than approving of the particular faith.

But type in "Islam is" (without the quotes), and the suggestions disappear.

Google claims this is a bug, and for a minute I almost believed them. Perhaps "is" appearing in the word followed by "is" created some kind of redundancy that the algorithm escaped, but "island is" and "isotope is" work just fine.

What clenched it was when I wrote "muslims are" and the suggestions disappeared again.

Google providing no suggestions for "Islam is" is NOT A BUG.

It's them censoring because they're afraid.

TSA Agents caught at off-duty party doing drugs

CBS News: Exclusive: TSA Workers Caught Using Drugs?
The investigation began late last year when a TSA Agent was arrested for allegedly counterfeiting parking passes at the employee parking lot. In his house, police found a videotape. On it was an after hours party where other TSA agents were allegedly using drugs, reports KCAL's David Goldstein.

TSA sources say the tape was turned over to investigators. Each employee identified was ordered to take a drug test. TSA won't say how many, but each one who failed was fired, Goldstein reports.

Hey, we should just be happy they even tested them.
He wouldn't talk specifics, but said the agency has random drug testing, and claims the employees would have been caught even without the video.

Oh, I'm sure their random drug testing program is effective, because everyone knows that when there is a threat of random drug testing, lots of employees hold parties with their coworkers where they do drugs.
None of the employees was charged with any crimes. Even the TSA agent caught counterfeiting parking passes wasn't prosecuted because no one he sold to would come forward, notes Goldstein.

Yep. Sounds like a federal agency.

These are the folks that are supposed to be keeping us safe.

Is there ANYTHING the government does well? (besides spending our money)
