The tax increase you won't find in your California Voter Guide
Apparently the California Voter Guide will exclude an important note on Prop 1A.
Even though plenty of anti tax organizations and republicans submitted opposition statements, Democrat Darrell Steinberg of Sacramento decided to give the task of writing the opposition statement to Democrat Loni Hancock of Berkeley.
And wouldn't you know it? The opposition statement in the voter guide leaves out a teeny tiny bit of information...
$14 billion in taxes.
Why would they feel the need to engage in this trickery? I thought the public were supportive of these tax increases!
I hope this gets out, and people realize what they've voting for...

SAVE MEXICO! SECURE THE FUCKING BORDER!
U.S. Is Arms Bazaar for Mexican Cartels
As you read the article, note the word "automatic" appears nowhere in the article. These guns are semi-automatic (one shot per trigger pull).
What this gun seller did was ILLEGAL.
What these Americans with clean records did was ILLEGAL.
What the people who transported these guns did was ILLEGAL.
But the problem lies with law-abiding Americans that have access to semi-automatic rifles. Obviously.
2,400? Out of how many? 3,000? 10,000? 50,000? How many guns do you think the drug cartels have? Probably more than those guesses. But that doesn't matter, because if it was just ONE gun, it was one gun too many, right? And if we pass a new AWB, the violence in Mexico will cease, right?
Idiots.
The article goes on to admit that crossing the border is child's play in a vehicle, and even those that enter Mexico through legal means are rarely searched. Who's fault is that?

In 2007, the firearms agency traced 2,400 weapons seized in Mexico back to dealers in the United States, and 1,800 of those came from dealers operating in the four states along the border, with Texas first, followed by California, Arizona and New Mexico.

Quote of the Rapists
Child rapists are so hated that few people can bring themselves to say a word in their 'defense'. That's what the State relies upon -- a general willingness to strip certain people of all rights under the law simply becuase they are that thoroughly detested. Through its treatment of sex offenders, the state establishes many precedents in law that can be used against other categories of people, especially in perilous time when oh-so many categories constitute a public threat.
~ Wendy McElroy
I've written about this before.
Don't allow yourself to become blinded by hate. It's exactly what they'll use to get their way.

Quote of the Day
In response to Mike Mallowe making this stupid comment:Philadelphia Police officer John Pawlowski was not killed by Rasheed Scruggs — he was killed by the .357 pistol that Scruggs was using.
Phelps responds with:C’mon guys, give him a break. He didn’t even write the article.
His computer did.

7 Questions to Obama Left on Cutting Room Floor
From the indominable reason and clarity that is Larry Elder, comes;
Obama in Prime Time: 7 Questions Left on Cutting Room Floor
Worth your time.
Larry stepped out of his radio position recently, leaving millions without his flawless logic. I know he'll be back in some capacity, and suspect he'll be back where all of America can see him.
Whatever your endeavors are, Larry, we wish you success. We need you back.
Obama in Prime Time: 7 Questions Left on Cutting Room Floor
1) Mr. President, tonight you criticized those who argue that FDR's policies failed. I'd like to read a passage from the diary of Henry Morgenthau, FDR's Treasury secretary: "We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises. I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started and an enormous debt to boot!" Please comment.
Worth your time.

Quote of the Race
Most of America doesn’t care about race. Over time race matters less and less to the average American. Nobody is just one race anymore, and every generation it matters less and less. For example, I don’t even know what exactly I am. The only time that it ever matters is when I have to fill out a government mandated form that puts me into some specific box.
I was reading about a guy today who father was Filipino, Spanish, and Chinese, and his mother was Irish and Japanese. Good luck checking a box there, dude. But you better, because the liberals still care. Nobody else does.

OC Grand Jury to CCW supporters: Shut the fuck up!
The Orange County grand jury has a message for county supervisors, gun rights advocates and everyone else who disagrees with Sheriff Sandra Hutchens' plan to reduce concealed weapons permits: "Let the sheriff do her job."
So the Grand Jury weighs in, and all it can produce is wild wild west! and blood in the streets! I keep saying that this is not rocket surgery, but sometimes I have to wonder.
CCW supporters have facts on their side. Honest, real-life, no-bullshit numbers that say CCW issuance does not increase violence, and in most cases actually decreases violence. Yet here we are, arguing about what should be academic. Why?
Seriously.
WHY?
Sometimes I wonder if our "betters" take their jobs seriously.
"An orderly society is the goal. Public safety is the paramount consideration," concludes the grand jury report. "The fact that public clamor has reached the ears of politicians is irrelevant."

Reading Kevin Baker and getting all worked up.
When is the last time you were sufficiently agitated?
I've always held that discomfort is good. Or rather, when others succeed in making me feel discomfort, it's good. I'm confident in my decisions, and I consider my options heavily before making my decisions, so when someone says something that makes me feel uncomfortable, it's usually because I have some doubt about my decision. This causes me to further consider their position, reconsider my decision, and possibly change my mind or actions.
Kevin seems to have a kind of clarity that always leaves me feeling uncomfortable.
I'm looking forward to shaking his hand at the Phoenix blog bash.

Fuck the 2nd Amendment
Too many people, on both sides of the 2A debate, are caught up with linguistics, true intent of the writings of dead people and the perceived force of court precedent. There are others that have hashed out Miller, Cruikshank, Heller, the Federalist Papers etc, at great lengths. While I admire and deeply respect the time, energy and detail in this research, I can’t help pouring myself a drink, raising it above my head and softly saying:
"Wow, that’s neato... now F*ck it."
As a life form, I have the inherent Right to preserve my living status whether or not the 2A was written clearly, written poorly or even written at all.
Sometimes we lose sight of the debate.
Self defense is a human right.
California legislatures passes the budget with few changes
The bad news
State sales tax raised one percentage POINT (NOT 1%)
Double vehicle license fee. (the promised repeal of which actually got Arnold elected)
Reduced dependent credit claimed on taxes. (hope you don't have lots of kids)
.25% increase on our taxes.
The "good" news
$0.12 increase in gas tax dropped (replaced by magic stimulus money from unicorn farts)
Turncoat Republican got a ballot initiative for "open" primaries approved. (slated for the 2010 ballot)
The open primaries ballot initiative is a good thing, it's actually something that could bring some real change to California. Unfortunately, it's likely to be opposed by almost every seated politician, because Dems want to keep things the same, and Republicans don't want to risk losing what seats they have to the choice of the people.
A majority of Republicans? What the hell do you think this is? Bipartisanship? Don't be stupid Hollingsworth. Bipartisanship only matters when Republicans are in control.
This'll be fun. If the people get pissed off at the taxes, and vote for the cap, they get the taxes for longer. If they don't vote for the cap, legislators get to spend all they want. This is part of the deal that was discussed behind closed doors with two Republicans who did not represent the entirety of the Republican legislature. They should have unseated these leaders earlier.
The people are not going to like this. Californians have proven themselves to be very slow to easily redirected anger. They're not going to like this, and they're likely going to make the wrong move. The politicians aren't the problem, it's the people who hired them. Californians need to realize that the politicians they vote for have real-world effects on their wallet. Twenty-somethings making peanuts and not paying any income taxes may not have felt previous tax increases, but they're certainly going to feel the doubled registration fees, and the increased sales tax. (assuming they still have their low-tier job after businesses adjust for the increased costs)
The people need to realize they have a duty to investigate the politicians they vote for more than just checking the letter next to their name.
Until that happens, change will never come to California.

All the taxes in the budget package would last for two years, but they would be extended another two years if voters approve a permanent spending cap that would be placed on the May 19 ballot as part of the complex deal worked out with Republican leaders over several months.

There is always hope...
Around 11 p.m., a group of GOP senators, unhappy with the higher taxes that Senate leader Dave Cogdill of Modesto agreed to as part of a deal with the governor and Democrats, voted to replace him in a private caucus meeting in Cogdill's office.
Dare California hope?
UPDATE: Holy crap. I just realized! I'm proud of California Republicans! PROUD! WOO!

California Republicans Hold the Line
California lawmakers stymied for third day on budget
No Republicans changed their votes to allow the tax-heavy budget proposal to pass. This is good, but I suspect it's only a matter of time before the Democrats sweeten the pot with the right something to buy the right Republican vote.
Schwarzenegger, lacking a budget, is prepared to make serious cuts and layoffs to keep the state afloat. If things continue in this manner, checks will stop coming from Sacramento, and non-essential services will grind to a halt.
This is the way things have to be.
Things must get worse before they get better. Passing this budget will only postpone the time when the state spends more than it takes in. The entrenched unions, with their impractical pay, immovable job security, and impossible pensions must be ousted before California can even begin to repair its fiscal problems. Pet projects must be cut, and unnecessary appendages of Sacramento removed. What is unnecessary? How about we start with Fire Departments, police departments, city hall functions, and roads; and see what other necessity pops up after that.
The only hope is that Republicans hold out long enough for the tough decisions to be made.
There is always hope.

To be certain, there was corruption in Carona's issuance of CCW permits. He issued CCW, and actual Sheriff badges as political favors to friends and donors, but he also issued CCW permits to people he didn't know, and people who did not make any contributions to his campaigns.
The first BOS meeting open to public comment on this topic saw citizen after citizen stand up and state that they had never met Carona, nor had they ever contributed to his campaign. These were men and women who met his standards for good cause to receive a CCW permit.
One of Hutchens' first actions was to revoke the honorary Sheriff badges Carona had issued to friends and donors. This was the right move, badges, and the powers of a Sheriff deputy belong only in the hands of people who have the qualifications and training to hold them. Actively revoking the CCWs of regular citizens with valid permits for legitimate reasons is not the right move. Hutchens used an axe to trim fingernails, and she's paying for her heavy handedness.
I understand that this is an editorial, and that this paper likely does not support issuance of CCW permits for most cases, but what does the LA Times consider to be a "good cause?" Should a woman who is being stalked, but lacks documentation from the stalker declaring his intentions be denied? What about the disabled or elderly, who are often targeted by criminals for their inability to effectively fight back?
Does the LA Times support a Sheriff's complete discretion in permit issuance? A discretion with its roots firmly planted in the racist refusal of permits to blacks in the south?

California hates the auto industry
Just realized; as the budget is proposed, buying a new car will result in extra sales taxes on the purchase, double the registration fee, and twelve more cents per gallon when you want to fill the tank.
This is the recipe for success???
The Governator is treading a very fine line with the car registration fee increase. The last time the governor pushed through a similar increase, he was recalled, and Arnie was voted into the spot!
They say history repeats itself, but I really think it's just that retarded politicians naturally have the same retarded ideas.
I sense a tax revolt in the future. People may not be paying attention right now, but they WILL feel the pinch this year, and they WILL be pissed.
Whether or not the people will be distracted by shiny objects before they can vote some real change is the real question.

Has any state ever taxed a tax before?
California's new budget imposes a "fee" on your taxes.
The "fee" is measured as 2.5% or 5% of whatever you paid in state taxes last year.

California one republican vote from 14B in new taxes
Unhappy with the highest gas, income, sales, property taxes (and highest business tax in the west), California democrats are pushing a budget with 14 billion in new taxes.
They need every democrat and three republicans to pass this monstrosity, and developed the budget behind closed doors, working closely with one Republican leader. In a late Sunday vote, the budget failed to pass by one republican vote.
We've already got Colorado actively courting businesses and professionals from California, and these taxes will go a long way to evacuating the state of every private company and skilled worker. Atlas is going to shrug California right off the economic map.
The Republicans are drawing lots to pick which three are going to take this budget bullet. Luckily for them, they managed to pick some representatives who are already termed out and need no reelection.
There is serious pressure for one Republican to step up, place his head on the stump, and wait for the axe. But what's the real threat when Schwarzenegger can just give you a cush job for playing along?
I'm trying really hard to stay in this state.
But Sacramento is trying really hard to get me to leave.
I've also added a new tag.

The Gun Nuts that weren't
From the LA Times comes; Armed and courteous foes of fewer gun permits.
Dana Parsons wrote an article opposing CCW issuance, and prepared for a hurricane of hatred.
But it didn't come.
Instead he got well-reasoned folks arguing against his point with nary a "TRAITOR!!!11" or "HOPE YOU DIE!!!"
He was pleasantly surprised by this, and I must admit, so am I. Reasoned debate is the only way to change hearts and minds. The fact that more gun rights advocates (and "gun nuts") are beginning to realize this means more success for us.
After speaking to the rationality of the CCW supporters who took the time to e-mail, he agreed that we are just regular, "salt-of-the-earth" people who just want to be able to defend ourselves. But, he notes, that doesn't change that fact that he, Dana Parsons, simply doesn't feel comfortable with more people carrying guns.
Luckily for most states in the union; feelings do not trump the bill of rights.
Perhaps I simply don't feel comfortable with just anyone at the LA Times being able to publish articles. Perhaps I feel it's OK for some limitations on our first amendment rights. Even if Dana disagrees, it's OK for me to infringe on his rights as long as I get a simple majority to agree with it, or find a supreme court justice who concurs.
Fortunately for Dana Parsons, I don't feel that way. I think Dana has the right to his free speech, up to, and INCLUDING shouting FIRE in a crowded theater. I do not, however, think his speech should be without consequence. If he abuses his right to free speech, by shouting "fire," he should be punished. But there should NOT be any form of prior restraint. Because I, apparently unlike Dana, believe that people as a whole are generally good.
I trust Dana Parsons not to shout "FIRE" in a crowded theater, so I don't vote that he and everyone else be muzzled before entering a theater, unless they get entirely discretionary approval from the Sheriff.
Dana Parsons does not trust his fellow man not to pull a gun, and shoot him, simply because the man has it in his pocket.
I hope Dana takes the time to review the permit-holder crime statistics of the other 37 "shall issue" states. Perhaps he can quell his fears and embrace the reality; CCW permit holders are the most law-abiding group of people in America.

Respecting firearm safety is a matter of life or death
A sadly avertable tragedy.
Xavier has posted a horrible story you must read.
It's not so much that people who respected firearm safety lapsed, but that they never really had a solid foundation in firearm safety, and were never corrected.
Ignorance and firearms leads to tragedy eventually.
Respect the four rules of firearm safety, and READ THIS POST.
Fallout 3 remains impressive
The significant other fired up Fallout 3 last night, and in the short time she played, I noticed a number of things I had never seen or heard during my complete and partial playthroughs.
I still amaze myself playing when I wander into a new discovery. That'll teach me to think I had discovered everything.
The $60 for Fallout 3 continues to rack up the hours of enjoyment. Last count was 150 hours.
Beats the shit out of $30 for two for a 2 hour movie!

Disgraceful conduct from Orange County Sheriffs Department
From the last Board of Supervisors' meeting comes a story about a stalker, a woman, an uncaring LEO, a caring LEO, a CCW permit, and the disrespectful actions of boys masquerading in sheriffs' uniforms.
Excuse the caps and possible errors, it's from the transcript. Emphasis mine.
Disgusting.
Excuse the caps and possible errors, it's from the transcript. Emphasis mine.
MY NAME ----- I LIVE IN LA HABRA. MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, SHERIFF HUTCHINS, I SPOKE TO YOU NOVEMBER 18th AND EXPLAINED TO YOU ABOUT MY STALKER, WHY I HAVE A CCW PERMIT, WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO ALLOW PERSONAL PROTECTION AS A GOOD CAUSE. YOU HEARD ME THEN SO I'M NOT GOING TO BE REDUNDANT AND GO THERE AGAIN.
WHILE I MAY NOT BE A PROFESSOR AT CHAPMAN LAW LIKE MR. MINERO OR MR. MICHELLE, WHO YOU HEARD FROM IN NOVEMBER I AM A CHAPMAN LAW GRADUATE AND MEMBER OF BAR. I HAD A NICE SPEECH PREPARED TO ADDRESS FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS AND INTIMIDATION. THEN I GOT A PHONE CALL FROM ONE OF THE PEOPLE AT ORDINARY CALIFORNIA CITIZENS CONCERNED WITH SAFETY, TELLING ME THEY HAD GOTTEN THE RESULTS OF A PUBLIC RECORDS ACT REQUEST AND THERE WAS SOMETHING IN THERE THAT I NEEDED TO SEE.
UNFORTUNATELY I CAN'T SAY WHAT I'D PLANNED BECAUSE I ONLY HAVE THREE MINUTES SO I'M GOING TO GIVE COPIES OF MY ORIGINAL DRAFT TO THE CLERK SO YOU CAN READ IT LATER.
WHEN I CHECKED MY E-MAIL AFTER THAT PHONE CALL I FOUND SCANS OF INFORMATION THAT OC AND CCW GAINED THROUGH THEIR PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST AND TOLD ME WHEN I WAS HERE IN NOVEMBER ADDRESSING YOU EMPLOYEES OF THE SHERIFF WERE DISCUSSING ME, MY GOOD CAUSE AND INFORMATION I GOOD CAUSE AND INFORMATION I HAD GIVEN THEM. I WASN'T ACTUALLY NAMED BUT HOW MANY FEMALE STALKING VICTIMS ADDRESSED YOU THAT DAY? JUST ONE. I HAVE HAD IT WITH THE WAY I HAVE BEEN TREATED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT THROUGHOUT THIS ENTIRE FOUR-YEAR-LONG NIGHTMARE.
FIRST I TOOK MY INFORMATION TO THE POLICE, WHERE DESPITE THREATS SUCH AS, "I DON'T WANT TO HURT ANYONE BUT YOU ARE PUSHING MY BUTTONS. MAYBE I SHOULD COME DOWN TO YOUR APARTMENT AND WAIT." I WAS TOLD COME BACK WHEN HE ACTUALLY TRIES TO HURT YOU. THE OFFICER WAS ANNOYED THAT I MADE HIM TAKE A REPORT AND MADE ME GO INTO EMBARRASSING PERSONAL DETAILS OF MY SITUATION AT THE PUBLIC COUNTER WITH TOTAL STRANGERS STANDING AROUND, LISTENING.
THEN I TOOK MY SITUATION TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, WHICH AT THE TIME WAS HEADED BY JACK ANDERSON, AND APPLIED FOR A CCW PERMIT. FOR THE FIRST TIME I FELT AS THOUGH I WAS TREATED WITH RESPECT. THEY LISTENED, READ THROUGH THE DOCUMENTATION AND GAVE ME MY PERMIT.
WITH THAT THEY GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK. I COULD LEAVE MY HOME AND LIVE MY LIFE WITHOUT BEING HELPLESS, IF HE FOUND ME. AND MOST OF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT MEANS BUT, TO A VICTIM, WHEN SOMEONE REALLY IS OUT TO GET YOU THE ABILITY TO PROTECT YOURSELF IS PRICELESS.
THEN I FIND OUT THAT THE PERSONAL INFORMATION THAT I GAVE THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WAS USED BY BORED OSCD EMPLOYEES FOR THEIR AMUSEMENT TO ENTERTAIN THEMSELVES WHILE I WAS SPEAKING. SORRY YOU WERE BORED AND HAD TO SIT HERE. BUT IF YOU CAN'T SIT THROUGH A MEETING WHERE PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO BRING LEGITIMATE CONCERNS TO YOUR ATTENTION WITHOUT GOSSIPING AND BEHAVING LIKE CHILDREN THEN YOU SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT GAMEBOYS INSTEAD OF BLACKBERRIES. THANK YOU.
Disgusting.
LA Times lacking CCW PSH???
In this article published today, the LA Times avoided the condescending tone it usually unsheathes when discussing CCW rights. Is this an anomaly? Could some minds have been changed by the speakers? Or was this a simple case of 'just the facts, ma'am'?
Time will tell.
Either way, good going, LA times.

Open Carry is not practical!
Open carry is wrong! It gives people negative impressions of the gun owning community! It scares the white people! How could you even think to do it in anti-gun California?!
What on earth do you expect to do?!
Carry your gun to Starbucks, Chili's, and TGI Fridays?
Carry your gun to the BANK?!
Carry your gun to Duncans, the bank (AGAIN!), and lowes?!
Carry your gun to Frys, Best Buy, Rubio's, and the Tmobile store?!
Carry your gun to In-n-out?!
Carry your gun to YET ANOTHER BANK?!
Carry your gun to Ralphs?!
Improbable!
Impossible!
Impressive!
Confucius say;
Man who say it can't be done, shouldn't interrupt man doing it.

Orange County Board of Supervisors meeting on CCW LIVE
Watch a fight for our rights now!
UPDATE: it's over! and therefore not live. You can watch the session by watching the morning and afternoon sessions for the BOS meeting on 2/10/09 here.
Be warned! It's open to public comment, so it'll probably go until 5pm PST.
Watch it, and see what some "Kommiefornians" are doing to fight for their gun rights.
What have you done for your rights lately?
UPDATE 1:22 PST, they're at lunch now...
UPDATE 1:40 PST, they're coming back in
UPDATE: good point, someone said they sent in their CCW app with a $40 check, and it was returned denied WITH the check. If the money is for processing, and it was returned, was it not processed?
UPDATE 2:20 PST, you bitch; you keep saying you have no control over issuance, YOU HAVE TOTAL CONTROL! THERE IS NO RECOURSE! YOU ARE THE FINAL WORD! YOU ARE LYING! She's still clinging to a THIRTY YEAR OLD AG letter of OPINION!
UPDATE 2:23 PST, Oh, I'm sorry! She said it was law because state law says it's illegal unless the sheriff issues a permit, except she has TOTAL CONTROL OVER ISSUANCE!
UPDATE 2:25 PST, Yeah, you better be around for that budget discussion!
*ET takes a breather*
UPDATE 2:41 PST, She isn't giving an inch. Her big move was the option to "expire" your permit early to prevent a blemish on your record from the revocation. She obviously plans to continue with revocation, and has no intention to bend on her "good cause" limitations. The BOS is obviously feeling the heat since Morloch took the time to make it clear he disagreed, and had nothing to do with the decision. She's not going to move, and the BOS is feeling the heat, so I think the BOS are going to feel more uncomfortable on reelection. Whether or not they will do anything about it, remains to be seen.

Snubby Pr0n! Knife Pr0n! Rabbit Pr0n! (oh my!)
Click any pictures for large size.
The 442 is fresh back from S&W. It was sent in for weak hammer strikes, and returned with a note indicating the issue was fixed along with repairs to the yoke for "end cylinder shake." The note said the problems had been "examined and repaired to our standards." I found this slightly amusing since the problems existed when it left the factory. So, S&W quality control; not so good. S&W repair service; fantastic! They paid shipping both ways, and asked only for a short letter explaining the problem and a return address.
I took it to the range, and put 50 rounds of 38 special through it so I could be sure it would be able to serve if needed. No misfires, but one surprise. I've called the Smithy Firestarter before, now I'm going to call it Firebreather. I'm not sure what they did to it back at S&W, but now when I shoot it, 5 inch flames shoot out the forcing cone at 10 and 2 o'clock. It's pretty fucking awesome.
I need to work on my one handed shooting a bit, and my one handed weak side shooting a lot... The trigger was also noticeably smoother upon return from S&W, which definitely improved my shooting with this tiny handful of a gun.
I like it even more now. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, I suppose. Maybe I should send my G22 somewhere. :p
Next up are two of the Benchmade 940 series.
The black blade is my first serious EDC, and saw carry every day in every place I was allowed since I was 16. It was my baby. It's 154cm steel, and the action flies open at a hard look.
Turners was having a sale on the late model satin bladed 940 that I just couldn't pass on. It sported my new favorite steel, S30v, and a wider cut on the blade that I really liked. When my girlfriend asked for a fast opening blade she could carry, the older 940 had a new job. Now we have matching knives, how cute.
The differences between the two were the more aggressive blade shape on the late model, the steel, and the coating on the handle.
The coating on the handle was actually a source of discomfort for me. The early model had a smooth anodized aluminum handle that was very easy on the fingers. It was smooth, but not slick. Almost 10 years of pocket carry made the grip very smooth, but never wore the green anodization. The late model had more of a bead-blasted matte finish that initially felt more like a chalk board. It was rough, but didn't afford any additional grip. After a year and a half of pocket carry the grip is much smoother, and no longer feels odd.
One of the best things about the 940 series is the grip shape. It just seems to fit perfectly in your hand.
It has all the curves in all the right places, and feels very natural, and very confident in your hand. If you have yet to wrap your hands around one, I would recommend it.
But don't take my word for it, the incredible popularity of the 940 series speaks for itself. Save up for it. Spend the money on it. It's worth it.
And now a limited edition Benchmade Skirmish.
This is a big knife. It's obviously a combat folder, something you carry where you cannot be armed, or want the piece of mind only a bigger blade can afford. Try to use the book for scale, this is a big knife.
I picked this up from Josh at SouthParkPundit a while ago. I took one look at the light carry wear on the handle and the practically unused blade, and realized he had given it the same job I had intended on giving it.
It's a heavy carry, but it's slim and carries well. At first, you think you'd prefer tip up carry, but the fact is the handle is so long your thumb would have quite a way to travel from the rear of the handle to open it. Pulling it from your pocket and twisting it into a high grip puts your thumb right against the opening loop. Tip down carry is faster on this knife.
Lastly, Spyderco Native II and III. The three is serrated with the wider handle.
Ignoring the sarration/plain difference in the blades, you'll notice the three has a wider blade than the two, and a different cut on the blade. I included a lot of pictures to help explain the opinion I shared earlier. Since then, I have become more accepting of the two, but still can't get over the utter lack of ergonomics.
The three is damn near perfection in ergonomics, while the two is an obvious evolutionary predecessor.
The difference in width of the grips seems minor, but it makes quite a difference.
The clip on the three is also superior in pliability, yet remains strong in grip. It's an impressive design that has clearly been minutely tuned.
Note the finger grip at the choil, just below the blade. The three has a fully shaped circle, and relief cuts in the grip so your index finger feels comfortable and sure there. The two is obviously misshapen, and the edges on the blade side are sharper than the three.
And Ava lounging about.

Lip Service or Lack of Communication on medical marijuana raids?
A Promise to Keep Obama's Medical Marijuana Promise
Big O said he'd stop DEA raids on medical marijuana facilities in states that allow medical use of marijuana, and since he has become president, he has reiterated his position. However the raids continue.
His lips are moving but his pen has yet to.

This is who doesn't think you should be allowed to carry a gun.
Even if you have a perfect history.
Even if you are disabled and unable to run.
Even if you live out of cell coverage.
Even if you run a gun shop that supplies the local swat team with automatic weapons.
This is who thinks it's OK to zoom in on the private notes and blackberrys of board of supervisors.
This is who claims she has no choice in her CCW policy even though she has SOLE CONTROL over the policy.
This is who intimidates her political opposition with body searches, deputies "tailing" opponents, and a SWAT team.
This is who does all of the above, and then complains about the "tone" of the debate!
This is our enemy.
Practically, philosophically, and politically.
Transparancy ducked by Obama Administration

The Government Money Disease Spreads
You've no doubt heard about Wells Fargo catching much flak for planning an expensive "junket" for top earners of the company, after they accepted tax-payer money as a bailout. Originally they defended it as a standard practice to reward their top earners. After much negative news coverage, they decided to cancel the trip, and likely the practice.
Initially, I was happy they canceled the expensive and apparently extraneous trip after claiming poverty, but after I thought about it a bit, I realized that this is just spreading the government mentality to the private sector.
There is a serious difference between workers who decide to work in government, and workers who decide to work in the private sector. There is more money, more bonuses, more payouts, and more extras in the private sector. The government sector lacks most of those things, but makes up for it in stability, and usually better practical benefits.
This "junket," as it was derogatorily called in the media, was one of those private industry perks disappearing. Do you think the top earners at Wells Fargo are going to stay at Wells Fargo now that they've had their bonuses and perks cut? Why wouldn't they take their considerable skill elsewhere? What incentive would the people at the top have to stay?
Unfortunately, there is no way this will stop at "junkets" or "CEO pay". How long until companies who start accepting government cheese kill everything that makes them different from a government branch?
As these perks evaporate from these companies, the top producers of the companies will have less and less reason to stay, and revenue will fall, necessitating more government money.
Eventually, any company who accepts a government "bailout" will homogenize into the DMV.
Government money is an infection used to spread the government's influence.
The checks must stop.

Things were better when I had no real say over my life
People who say things were better in high school or when they were kids are full of shit.
... Or irresponsibility.
Yeah, being an adult is hard. There's shit you've gotta do, and numbers to keep track of. But you have freedom. Real freedom. Not the kind of freedom that requires you to do several things to afford yourself liberty time; the kind of freedom that lets you do almost anything or go wherever you please.
I can stay up late on a weekday.
I can have ice cream for breakfast.
I can play video games all night.
I can buy candy at 2am if I want to.
I can get as many tattoos or piercings as I want.
But these are tiny freedoms in the grand scheme.
I can move to another state.
I can move to another country.
I can buy a boat and live on it.
I can start my own business.
I can get married and live with someone.
I can have children.
Don't be so narrow minded as to focus on the responsibilities of freedom, and ignore the freedoms of freedom.
That way lies the nanny state, and limited freedom.
Acquire a taste for your big freedoms.

Benchmade Fixed Griptilian Sheath Mod
The Benchmade Fixed Griptilian is a fine knife that comes with a fine sheath.
However, I took issue with the placement of the snap strap. It's high enough that the shape of the handle allows the knife to slide upward until the heel of the knife is against the snap catch, exposing the blade.
I decided to relocate the snap strap so it would be more accessible, and hold the knife more securely.
I removed the strap from the top of the sheath, and cut off the end of the strap with the bottom snap on it. I cleaned up the edges of nylon with a lighter, and epoxied the bottom snap square to the outside of the sheath, under one of the straps. (this took a bit of fitting) I also cut a small relief in the horizontal strap so the bottom of the snap was not covered. (right above the "M" on the benchmade logo)
I then epoxied the rest of the strap to the plastic back behind the end of the grip. This takes a bit of fitting, so make sure you get it right by testing it before the epoxy dries!
Note the angle, and the small relief cut in the strap for where it wraps around the grip.
Done! Nice and smooth, exposed handle, secure lock-up, and convenient to unsnap and draw.
The only point of caution is sheathing the blade, because the strap likes to fold over the opening right where the knife passes. Be sure you draw the strap back before inserting the blade.

The verge of a breakthrough
I'm on the verge of a breakthrough with my pistolcraft; I can feel it.
I was at the range yesterday with my trusty Buckmark .22 pistol, and was doing alright, but not nearly as well as I'd done in the past.
I tried to remember what I did differently, and it struck me. I adjusted my grip, and shot off 10 rounds at 50 feet. It felt uncomfortable, I needed to readjust a few times, and I had little idea of how well or poorly I had done.
When the paper plate was close enough for me to see, I was dumbstruck. Well, not dumbstruck exactly; I did say, "You've got to be fucking kidding me."
I had a wide three leaf clover, with one shot right in the middle of the three. The remaining 6 shots fell randomly around the group, but the impression was made.
For those four shots, I did everything perfectly. I futzed with my grip and position while shooting, so I can't tell if the good group was from shots made while uncomfortably in position, or in a slightly looser position. Either way, I'm getting better.
After a bit, I hung a tennis ball, and kept putting it further out. Locking my shoulders, and moving my eye with the front sight made tracking the swinging target much easier, but the front sight was black against the black backstop, necessitating true lock up on eye/front/rear sight alignment, because in order to confirm my sights were aligned, I'd have to aim at the white of the roof, or a neighbor's target. I wanted to develop that "feel" for my firearm that I had developed with my paintball marker.
Where you look at your target, and think about hitting it, and it is hit.
Practice, practice, practice.

My new AwesomeR-15
I was going to pose it with a pmag, but the HK mag looked better :)
Click any picture for Awesome-Size
It is, of course, a California legal AR-15
The anodizations look rather mismatched under the flash, but in regular light and sunlight, the difference is only faint.
Without any "evil" features, it can accept detachable magazines of unlimited capacity (assuming you owned your mags prior to 2000, of course).
The silly "evil" features include, pistol grip, adjustable stock, and flash hider. So the pistol grip was replaced with a MonsterMan Grip, the precision rig had no need for a collapsible stock, and the flash hider has been removed, soon to be replaced with either a thread protector, or a muzzle break.
Muzzle with the Vortex flash hider. (After the upper was removed from the lower, of course)
