Shoot rabbits?! You mean like... with-- GUNS?!

Mission Viejo gives go-ahead to shoot rabbits in Casta del Sol

Packed into a collection of items, this extension of a previously approved item allowed the continued elimination of rabbits in certain areas using air rifles.

I have a pet rabbit, and would certainly not want anyone to shoot her with an air rifle. *ET pauses for a moment to think of what he would do to a someone who would dare shoot his pet rabbit. Scratch that; what he wouldn't do* But these rabbits are a nuisance. They're destroying property. They should be treated as you would a wild dog.

Yet, the comments are full of people who are concerned about the "bad karma" of killing these poor little fuzzy friendly troublesome animals.

I mean; how could people possibly prefer hiring trappers to trap the rabbits, sedate them, medically transport them to veterinary clinics where they can get surgery to prevent them from breeding, transport them back to the trapping area, and released for the mere cost of thousands of taxpayer dollars per rabbit; when there are qualified hunters who would PAY for the opportunity?

Is this madness?!

No.

This is California!

Please don't press me on this. I'm not entirely sure of my true stance on the issue. I've never hunted, but I've been working on mentally preparing myself to hunt for about a year. Whether or not I'd actually be able to pull the trigger on a cottontail remains to be seen.

The pragmatist in my says, shoot the buggers. But part of me still feels very... liberal at the thought.

Are these cottontails or jacks?

rabbits are very tasty.

I know how hard it sounds to shoot something that's similar to a pet you own. I have trouble envisioning myself ever pulling the trigger on a coyote because my dog is so coyote-like, and coyotes are so dog-like.

Rabbits aren't a great first-time hunter thing, IMO. A bad hit and they sound disturbingly like a baby crying.

Wah wah wah wash the sand out of your cooches. If you're hungry enough you'll hunt them with dull spoons and eat them without ginseng sprinkles.

My pup Yogi-the-wunder-mutt is being overly playful. He's worried that the poopay might actually be hitting the fan. And when the dog food runs out...

As Mike points out wabbits are quite tasty...with fava beans and a nice chianti...slpslpslpslp...

Actually wabbits marinaded in anything sweet (MD20-20 in a pinch) is extra drool worthy...babies not so much.

Wow, those are some nice manners you've got there.

Anon, I'm not talking about being hungry enough. If I were, I'd have no qualms about hunting them with dull spoons, as you suggested. But hunting for food is almost always not required, and given the option of pulling the trigger on a beautiful deer so you can butcher it and eat it is not strictly necessary when the market does it for you.

I plan on learning to hunt so that I can say I did it, and hopefully learn something about myself, but I have no illusions that what I want to do is necessary for the continued existence of myself and my loved ones.

I wonder if you'd have similar sand in your "cooch" if you had to eat Yogi-the-wunder-mutt, or shoot a dog that looked just like yours to survive, or for nuisance animal destruction, or for the simple pleasure of the hunt.

More clearly..."Yogi-the-wunder-mutt is...worried that...when the dog food runs out..." I'd expect the same from him if I perished within reach and need.

Not (de)pressing...

Stir fried anything below me on the food chain and thankful for their contribution to my !survival! without so much as the blink of an eye.

I quit hunting because I did not need the meat to survive. If I lived on a farm or ranch that is another pragmatic story.

Yummogi in 2012 you bring the chianti!

It's the 2012 pet cook-off!

Rabbit hutches are pretty easy to make...
